Background of the study
Twitter captions in Nigeria have become an innovative space where traditional morphological boundaries are frequently redefined. Users employ creative word formations, abbreviations, and blended expressions to convey complex cultural and emotional messages in succinct formats. This phenomenon is driven by the platform’s character limitations and the fast-paced nature of digital communication, which encourage linguistic brevity and inventiveness (Okeke, 2023). Nigerian users, drawing on a rich tapestry of indigenous languages and global linguistic trends, frequently introduce novel affixes, compounds, and clipped words that diverge from standardized forms. These innovations not only serve communicative efficiency but also signal identity, humor, and group affiliation. As Twitter captions evolve, they mirror broader societal changes and the digital transformation of language. The interplay between traditional morphology and contemporary digital usage offers insights into how online environments act as incubators for language change. By documenting these morphological innovations, the study will reveal patterns of lexical creativity that challenge conventional linguistic theories and contribute to our understanding of digital language evolution in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024). The research further examines how cultural references and multimedia influences shape these innovations, underscoring the role of social media as a catalyst for rapid language change.

Statement of the problem
Despite the increasing prevalence of creative morphological forms in Nigerian Twitter captions, systematic research on this phenomenon remains scarce. Existing studies have primarily focused on lexical trends without delving into the structural changes that underpin morphological innovation. This lack of analysis creates a gap in understanding how digital constraints and cultural influences interact to produce new word forms. The study seeks to address this gap by investigating the processes and outcomes of morphological innovation in Twitter captions, thereby providing insights into the broader implications for Nigerian digital discourse (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze innovative morphological patterns in Nigerian Twitter captions.
  2. To identify the processes driving word formation in digital posts.
  3. To assess the cultural implications of these morphological changes.

Research questions

  1. What novel morphological patterns emerge in Twitter captions?
  2. Which word formation processes are most prominent?
  3. How do these innovations reflect Nigerian cultural and digital trends?

Significance of the study
This study provides valuable insights into digital lexical innovation by examining morphological changes in Twitter captions. The findings will advance theoretical understanding of language evolution in digital spaces and offer practical implications for linguists, educators, and media practitioners in Nigeria (Okeke, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to analyzing morphological innovation in Twitter captions within Nigerian digital discourse. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline language practices.

Definitions of terms

  • Morphological Innovation: The creation of new word forms or modifications to existing words.
  • Twitter Caption: A brief textual description or comment accompanying a tweet.
  • Digital Discourse: Communication and language practices occurring on digital platforms.
